I look back at my time spend with great affection. I not only learned Dutch, but was given a taste of what life is like outside of the US. I was sorry to hear of the Base closure, but I guess with the state our economy as it is it was just a matter of time.....

WEBMASTER NOTE: Soesterberg Air Base was officially closed for good on 12 November 2008. I attended the final ceremony...sad...  Kevin

Comments:

It has been quite some time since I have been to the site, but the improvements are outstanding.  I started out in the AGE Shop Servicing Section, then PPP/WRM, next I was in-charge of Maintenance, and finally the AGE Flight Chief. Following that, I was the Logistics Maintenance Flight Production Superintendent. No matter what position I was in, all I remember was the excellent people that worked with me. I definitely remember The Brutus, the Flame, and let’s not forget the hangouts in Amsterdam either.

I too miss the shwormas, “real” Heinikens, and all of the other luxuries we enjoyed there as well. I have been retired for 11 years now, and I still feel home-sick thinking of the place. This was without a doubt the BEST Assignment I had in my 20-years of service. It was good to see a couple of names I remember; Robert Fair and Stephen Guinty.

Comments:I retired from the AF in 2003, like many on this site, my best years were at Soesterberg. I wish I could go back and relive it all again. Holland is such a treasured place with great people. It has been a long time, but I welcome anyone still out there to shoot me an email. I looked at some of the old pictures and found myself in a few of them, back in the day when I worked for Doug Watson.
Good memories with LaVonne, Rosie, Slavik, Brian, Chuck and so many others...I hope all my friends are well and healthy, Cheers

Comments:I wasn't there when the Wolfhounds were at SSB. I wish I was. I was born in december 1990 so i haven't seen you coming and going back as well. My dad took me to the base for the first time when I was 4. I then saw helicopters and planes coming over. Ever since I'm sold to the Air Force and want to become a fighter pilot myself. If I really get that far I want to form a demonstration team consisting of the fighters used by the Wolfhounds (F-86 Sabre, F-100 Super Sabre, F-4 Phantom, F-102 Delta Dagger, F-15 Eagle) anf fly on open days like those of the RNLAF. As many of you probably know, the Military Air Force Museum is moving to SSB. It would be cool if they keep 1 runway and the control tower open and use this as base for the demo team. The time the team isn't on the move it could be on display in the old Hangars. doesn't matter it's going to succeed or not, most important is that the memory of the 32nd TFS has to live on. This site helps reaching that goal!
I really like it. Keep up the good work.

i miss dutchymamnou, if i spelt it right its only been a life time ago!
remember Lybia?
Zulu in the night?
e.o.r to get her right?
to my friends I shared a dream
I fall back to a military scheme,
an idea to survive three days
still the parties were'nt the only craze
I drank with the british and danced with dutch
I fed frenchfries to the lake ducks
I drank to pass out in somsja with joss and ach
trained to Adam a heck of a lot
walked on cobble stone roads in the middle of the night
I'll forever hold holland in sight
never met a lady like Netherland so dear
I'm still a little Dutch in side my heart here
if anyone finds Chris Ball tell him im alive
tell Kirk Jessup i did survive
one day I'll return to the land under the sea
and walk the roads of Zeist once more to see
the old memories come alive from whence i felt a dream
but finding this here............
its all to clear........
I truely
was there!

Comments:I stumbled across this site accidentally and was blown away by the pictures! I worked with all those people! I Would love to hear from anyone I worked with or come by my Wine Bar, if you're in Redding, California and say hi. I made so many great friends at Soesterberg and miss everyone. It's funny how you move on and put it all in the back of your mind until a simple picture brings it all rushing back. Seeing Doug Watson flashing the peace sign in the back of the shift change van brought back a lot of memories. I think they were even coming to relieve me (I was probably on Tango 2, or knodding off on Golf 1). Would really love to hear from (might be spelled wrong): Jim Mickelson, Cherry (we called him Cherry so much I forgot his real name), Carla Gigstead, Mike Lund, Mearls, John and Kerri (I can't believe I can't remember their last name. He loved Guns-n-Roses, drove a Ford Ranger pick-up and Kerri was a beautiful skinny blonde). Anyway great site!! Thank you for the memo

Comments:I am so happy to find this site.  It floods me with nostalgia.  The years that I spend at Camp New Amsterdam were the most carefree and enjoyable years of my life.  One could say that I grew up there.  I was 18 years old when I got there and I was 21 when I left.  I met some of the nicest and most genuine people there.  They will live in my heart and my memories forever.  I worked with with Msgt Al Doyle, SSgt. Ed Naki, Sgt. Kenneth Clark, Sgt. Carter, SMSGT Kennedy, Sgt. Johnny Brooks, and a bunch of other great people from all over the base.  We were young and were going to live forever.  I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from those days.

My dad, Guy L. Hamman was stationed in The Hague, he worked through The American Embassy as a food inspector with the Vetenary Corp in the Army. We would visit the base every month to go to the commissary and PX. Oh Yeah, had to get those shots and see the dentist. Happy childhood memories. As everybody that has signed these guestbooks has said, the Dutch people were wonderful. he years we lived in Holland were the best years of my life, and I hope to bring my wife there to visit in the near future.
